A research focused master’s
The European MSc in Artificial Intelligence (MUIA) is organised and taught by the Department of Artificial Intelligence (DIA), and is part of the postgraduate offer of the School of Computer Engineering of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM). With a research orientation, it began to be taught in the 2010/11 academic year, and provides quality training in various fields of current research in artificial intelligence.

The European MSc in Artificial Intelligence (MUIA) constitutes the training period associated with the PhD Program in Artificial Intelligence at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), so students who complete it have the opportunity to directly access said programme

What is the length of the MUIA
The MUAI is taught in two semesters, that is, one academic year. The first semester is devoted to lectures (the student must attend seven), while the second semester is devoted to seminars (the student must attend, at least, 6 and to the development of the Master’s Final Project.
Is the MUIA a presence master?
Although the MUIA is a presence master, the second semester, during which students are expected to attend seminars and develop and defend their master’s final project, it may be possible to take place partially by videoconference, for duly justified reasons.
In which language is the MUIA taught?
The languages used to teach the MUIA are Spanish and English. The modules and seminars offered in English are indicated here.
The subjects offered in English will be taught in English if there is a student enrolled in them who does not speak Spanish; otherwise, if all the students are Spanish speakers, they can be taught in Spanish. It is important to know that it is not possible to take the whole MUIA without a good knowledge of Spanish.
What kind of studentships are there to support studying the MUIA?
The Department of Artificial Intelligence of the UPM announces the annual José Cuena Awards, aimed at incoming students at the MUIA. Upon application, students of any nationality, enrolled full time, who have passed the 7 subjects of the first semester and have obtained the highest grades (average of the 7 grades) are eligible for this award.In addition, the research groups to which the master’s degree lecturers belong occasionally offer grants associated with research projects in which they are involved, which allow students to carry out their final master’s degree project and/or subsequent doctoral thesis with funding. Are there any job prospects for MUIA graduates, or is the degree solely geared towards continuing to PhD studies after its completion?
Despite the fact that the MUIA constitutes the training period for the PhD in Artificial Intelligence, this is not the only purpose of the degree, and an alternative consists of finding a job in R&D companies and institutions, a career path that numerous DIA postgraduate students have already followed.

Yes, the MUIA is associated with the PhD in Artificial Intelligence at the UPM, which involves the adaptation to the European Higher Education Area of the doctoral programme that had been taught until the 2009-10 academic year.

What are the rules for staying at MUIA?
In those situations in which the student has completed the 3 academic years and wishes to continue their master’s studies, they must submit an application to the Academic Committee of the Master’s Degree in Artificial Intelligence, which will analyse the student’s situation and submit their application to the Academic Planning Committee of the ETS in Computer Engineering. It also includes the requirement that the student must pass at least 15 ECTS in the first year, and at least 45 ECTS in the first two years of enrollment. In any case, the rules of permanence of the Master will be in accordance with the regulations established by the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid for the regime of permanence in the University Master’s degrees.
Is the MUIA adapted to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA)?
The MUIA is, effectively, the adaptation of the MSc in Artificial Intelligence, which had been taught since the academic year 2006-2007, to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). The MUIA was positively verified for the first time by ANECA on 13 January 2010 and has been taught continuously since then.
