IMPORTANT: Students enrolled in the Master's Thesis subject will have access to the subject's Moodle page, where they will be able to obtain the documentation (templates, documents to deliver, ...) and carry out the procedures described on this page (MFP report submission, etc.).
Master's Final Project assignment
The Master’s Final Project assignment process, passed by the Master in Artificial Intelligence Academic Committee (CAMIA) at its ninth ordinary meeting on 15/12/2011 is as follows:
- Students shall have to contact a member of the Master in Artificial Intelligence academic staff to supervise their Master's Final Project.
- Alternatively, the students will receive on December a file with TFM proposals made by professors of the MUIA and will send to the coordinator of the degree their preferences on the TFM proposals, identifying up to a maximum of 5 proposals that most appeal to them.
- If none of the offers appeal to students or they are not assigned any of their chosen options (more than one student may select the same proposal), they shall have to put forward a proposal related to a Master in Artificial Intelligence subject and specifying up to three academic staff capable of supervising the project.
Next, the research groups are listed and a link to their web pages is provided, and a presentation for each of them is given, the projects they are involved in and other general information. These presentations were used in the talk about the Research Groups of Artificial Intelligence within the framework of the Complementary Activities Week, of the Faculty of Computer Science.
The research groups involved in the MSc in Artificial Intelligence are available at the following link.
From the information provided by the research groups, students can identify the goal on what should be based the development of their MFP and even a PhD later.
Co-supervision of a MFP by two professors will be allowed, provided that this is requested and justified to CAMIA and where one of the professors must be teaching part of the Master’s course, and both must have a PhD.
Evaluation panel
A committee shall be established for each MFP defense. The Academic Board of the MSc in Artificial Intelligence will appoint the evaluation panel among the degree teaching staffewhose research lines are related to the TFM topic (Approved at the sixty-first meeting of the CAMIA on May 16th, 2019).
The designation of Chairman, Member and Secretary of the committee shall be based on rank and seniority of the members selected for the same.
The Secretary of the committee will be responsible for booking hemicycle for carrying out the act of MFP defense, and collecting and delivering the defense minutes in the Administrative management secretariat a printed copy of the MFP (if condifentiality requested).
Administrative process
Students can enrol for the MFP in the regular annual registration period (July-September) or in the extended registration period (January-February).
In attention to the uniqueness of the MFP, in case the student has not been able to overcome it in an academic year, the prices to be paid in the following academic year will be those corresponding to 25% of the price in the first registration of the Decree of Public Prices, which will entitle the student to a single examination session without prejudice to the rest of the rights acquired when enrolling in said subject.
FAQ: so, if I don't finish by July, shall I enrol again in September? Yes, you will have to enrol again by paying a fraction of the normal amount.
It is necessary to take into account that the payment fee received by the University has to be exactly the one indicated in the payment slip. In this sense, the bank charges on international transactions, bank transfer fees or other charges must be assumed by the student. Once the payment has been completed, please email to the Administrative management secretariat the receipt of payment.
Note: Students that are not enrolled for any Master in Artificial Intelligence subject lose their official status as students of the UPM and are not eligible for official or unofficial grants, mobility assistance…
The members of the evaluation panel (and the student) will establish the date and time of the MFP defense, and notify it to the Master coordinator 7 calendar days prior to the act of the defense.
FAQ: What does this mean? It means that the advisor and the student will have to
-
agree on an approximate date for the defense
-
ask other teachers to be part of evaluation panel [it is the task of the advisor]
-
communicate the information about the MFP and the evaluation panel to the Master's coordinator, so that the defense can be authorized by the Academic Commission, and the necessary documentation can be prepared by Student Secretary [it is the director's task]
The student must upload to a web form:
- The MFP report in electronic form (pdf file), at least one week before the act of the defense; the student will also be in charge of sending the report to the members of the evaluation panel.
- If he/she wants his/her work to be published in the archivo digital UPM: the forms corresponding to the authorization for publication (form 1/2, form 2/2) in the archivo digital UPM.
- Alternatively, if he/she wants his/her work NOT to be published in the archivo digital UPM: the confidentiality request form.
FAQ: Do I need the vice-dean's (actually, vicerrector) signature? No, you don't: it will be added later. And, electronic signatures are preferred.
In case the defense is face-to-face, the Secretary of the evaluation panel will be responsible for booking the proper room for carrying out the act of MFP defense. The evaluation panel will fill out and deliver the MFP defense minutes in the MUIA secretariat (Victoria), together with the competence tables and a printed copy of the MFP report (if confidentiality is requested).
MFP defense
Both Spanish and English will be allowed as languages for the writing of the MFP report, as well as its defense before the panel.
The presentation can be both face-to-face or online.
FAQ: in case the defense is online, do I have to tell the coordinator about this? No, you just have to make sure that everyone (the advisor(s), the panel) agree on this. And, you can freely use any videoconference system you like (anyway, we provide a Zoom link below).
- If it is face-to-face, the secretary of the evaluation panel will be in charge of booking a room and sending the documents of the presentation to ETSIINF Oficina de Postgrado.
- If it is online, the use of the link below is recommended in order to set up the meeting. The secretary of the evaluation panel will be in charge of sending the documents of the presentation to ETSIINF Oficina de Postgrado.
The defense of the MFP shall consist of an oral presentation about it by the student for a minimum of 20 minutes and a maximum of 40 minutes, followed by a round of questions by the panel members for a maximum of 20 minutes.
The evaluation panel will take into account the following items regarding the MFP:
- Students are familiar with artificial techniques and methods to tackle and solve scientific and technological problems.
- Students apply existing artificial intelligence techniques to solve a problem.
- Students invent an innovative technique or method in the field of artificial intelligence research.
- Students invent and disseminate developed techniques or methods that have been adopted by society or the business world, leading to innovative informatics processes and solutions or publish MFP results in a peer-reviewed national or international journal (accepted papers are also admissible).
Master's Final Projects with honors
The criteria approved by the CAMIA (15/12/2012) to propose MFP with honors will be considered: The student creates and disseminates developed techniques or methods that have been incorporated into the social and business reality, creating processes and innovative solutions; or publishing (or accepted) the MFP results in a peer review (national or international) journal or congress.
According to the protocol for the desination of MFP with honors approved by the CAMIA at the fifty-ninth ordinary meeting, held on March 14, 2019:
An evaluation panel can propose a MFP with honors only if the associated work has already been submitted to a journal or international conference before the defense day. The student must provide the corresponding documentation to prove it.
Each academic course, a commission including 3 members form the MUIA teaching staff will be assigned for granting MFP with honors. Supervisors of candidate MFPs cannot be selected as members of such committee.
The commision will meet in the first half of December to resolve the concession.
The commision will only consider the MFP that have been previously proposed by the corresponding evaluation panel. The criteria used for the MFP with honors granting will be the quality of the dissemination (peer review, jcr, core, ...). The associated work sent to the journal or internation conference must be accepted with a deadline of December 1st.
The MFPs defended by students who complete the Master's Degree in a single academic year have priority over those defended in any subsequent call.
